I am going to start by saying Aunty B finally posted the official titles for all the episodes in Series III, and they will wrap up on June 23rd. So here is the episode line up.
Smith and Jones
The Shakespeare Code
Gridlock
Daleks in Manhattan
Evolution of the Daleks
The Lazarus Experiment
42
Human Nature
The Family of Blood
Blink
Utopia
The Sound of Drums
Last of the Time Lords
This list has some strong titles in it, including at least one two parter staring the Daleks, a homage to the late Douglas Adams, and hopefully some answers about the Time Lords and the Time War.
So on with the show, this weekends episode was The Shakespeare Code. Where we find the Doctor giving Martha her promised one trip in the T.A.R.D.I.S., and he takes her to meat the bard. The bard turns out to be the rock star of the 1500s, and falls madly in lust with Martha. Of course there has to be something sinister going on, or the doctor wouldn't be there, this time it is witches, well aliens who use magik. Which the Doctor explains is just another type of science, where as humans use math to change the world (ie, make nuclear bombs, weapons, ect...) the aliens use words. So it's a good thing that Shakespeare is there. We see in this episode a new side to the Doctor, we see his pain and loss. He is more than a little abrupt and unfeeling with Martha, but it's not something he is even aware of doing, it's cause his hearts are still broken over the lose of Rose, which the witches learn, they use the power of names, and almost kill Martha (she is saved because she is out of her time) but the Doctor has no name, they think that there is a name that will have power over him "Rose", which unfortunately for them does, the Doctor tells them that it is the only name that will drive him on. Overall this is a good episode, shoot in authentic locations including the real Globe Theatre, and it shows.
Next week, welcome to Gridlock. back in the future where there is massive gridlock and people are kidnapped all the time (including Martha). There is a secret below the city (could this tie into the next weeks Daleks in Manhattan?), and we finally get to see what secret Face of Boe has for the Doctor in their third and final meeting.
Comments
I loved this episode and all the in jokes about JK etc!!
I also love the chemistry between Martha and the Dr, which having seen a couple of the ones with Rose, I think is much stronger... I dunno, others may disagree!
I have to say though the Shakespeare bloke irritated me to bits, and I don't really know why??
Good episode though all round! :)
I didn't like this one actually. And hubby was ranting when they shot an arrow into the tardis door at the end - serious Whovians would go mad at that - the tardis isn't really made of wood is it.....
It was too "clever clever" with the references and stuff - not my kind of episode at all....
Good point... if it's an effective disguise it has to behave exactly like real wood, even if it isn't... (god i'm a geek.)
ANyway, I was thinking about that arrow too... when the TARDIS dematerialised should the arrow have gone with it or just fallen to the ground?
